Every year, the Open Thoughts blog poses a pertinent, universal question of interest to society. A question that captures the concerns and motivations of a research group at the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3) within the Open University of Catalonia (UOC). A question that will also be addressed by leading figures from all over world throughout the year.

Thus, different personalities from different backgrounds set out and openly discuss their theories on the Open Thoughts blog Question. In doing so, they create the necessary framework to lead readers along a path of exhaustive, eclectic analysis of an important topic of their time.

Run by the Research and Knowledge Transfer Support Office (OSRT) at the UOC, Open Thoughts ultimately aims to break down barriers and help research at the UOC cut across different areas, stir things up and create currents of thought in response to the conflicts of our age.

About the Question
Are Big Data & Analytics shaping a smarter society?

Every day we generate a huge amount of big data, but we need to resort to analytics to make abstract information meaningful and get valuable knowledge from it. In education, learning platforms let us easily gather an immense quantity of data regarding students’ behaviour, interactions, preferences and opinions. When properly analysed — through learning analytics — all these data might provide useful insight on how to make learning processes more adaptive, attractive and efficient.

Are these techniques allowing us to provide better support to our students? Are we taking advantage of big data and analytics to help shape the citizens of the future?
